On the 26th, Ralph, Minna, Mr. Howe and I got interviewed by Shaw TV. The cameraman's name was Zach and the interviewer's name was Bianca. Mr. Howe had told us about the interview last week and we were happy to do it because it was about sustainability and what we were doing at school.
We missed most of P.E. class for the interview. Ralph, Minna and I were able to go onto the roof of the school for the first time ever, to see the solar panels. I didn't know that the solar panels were so big and they were the standard size solar panels for average homes. It was really fun walking on the roof because I knew that other students wouldn't be able to be up there. Mr. Howe was also cautious of us not stepping too close to the edge of the roof. We went up there in the beginning of 2nd period just to check it out and also so we knew what to talk about.
At about 11:30, we met upstairs at the door that lead to the roof and waited for Mr. Howe. We all introduced ourselves and talked a little bit about what we were doing and stuff like that. When we got on the roof, we started our interviews and for the camera, we had to talk but then stop after a while to switch angles and stuff. So we talked about the same thing twice most of the time for the camera and all that stuff.
After that, we had individual interviews, all this taking place on the roof. I learned a lot about the solar panels, and what happened to heat up the water and such. It was really interesting and it was fun to be up on the rooftop.
We finished out interviews and we got downstairs. We showed Zach and Bianca the meter and the picture of a sustainable house that's in front of the Cafeteria doors. When we were there earlier, the meter showed that the water was boiled to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. We were down there again about an hour later we saw that to show the two people and it had rose to about 280 degrees Fahrenheit. It was really cool to see that it had rose so much in only about an hour.
That was pretty much the end of our interview and stuff with the two so we said our goodbyes and headed off to P.E.
It was really fun to go on the roof. Oh, and we saw bones up there from the birds and stuff. It was kind of gross but cool at the same time.
I hope I'll be able to go on the roof again.

Green Bricks Challenge
On May 12th, our Tech class went into the computer lab to submit our projects on the Green Bricks website. We handed in our group projects, aside from the Sustainability Summit work. I'm not sure when the challenge ends, but Fiona sent me an e-mail back that morning and told us good luck. I'm guessing the challenge hasn't ended yet, but I'm not sure.
We finished our group project for this day, so our group decided that if we didn't modify it or anything, we would hand it in to Ms. Kam when our projects are due for our class.
Our class right now, haven't been working as much on our projects. It seems like every time we have science class, it's cut off short and we still have to do our textbook work and study for finals. Also, we went to the Planetarium a few weeks ago, so that was another class gone. We only have about 3 weeks of school left and then finals and then summer, so we don't really have time to do any Green Bricks work right now. Also our group projects are due May 27th, so we would be done with the sustainability unit.
I think that everyone in the class has learned a lot about sustainability, even if they haven't been involved with the summit and the meetings. I think they have a concept of what's happening, recycling, turning off lights and stuff like that. Our Tech class is always reminding teachers to turn off some lights when they're not needed, to open the blinds and what not whenever.

If it weren't for them, the summit group couldn't have planned any meetings and we couldn't have gotten anywhere if they hadn't drove us places. I'm happy I got to learn many things too and I'm actually proud of myself because I got involved and met new people. I think in my part, it was a big accomplishment and I feel really good.

Sustainability Summit
On April 28th, we finally had our long-waited Sustainability Summit!
The summit took place all day (from about 9~3) at Wolfe Elementary School.
I was pretty nervous the day of, but grew comfortable with the environment and realized that there really wasn't anything to be scared of. The people were strangers, but they were either students or VSB staff members.
First, Ian from the board made a presentation on what's happening at the schools. He told us interesting facts and we also had a presentation from the Byng students. It was the presentation they had given at the school board along with ours, a few months ago when all of this actually started developing. They had modified it a little bit with some new information & pictures. Overall it was really interesting and easy to focus on.
Then next we had the World Cafe where all the student facilitators sat at each table while the students and staff, divided into different groups rotated around each subject. There were 5 topics; Food & Composting (where I was one of the facilitators for that topic), Energy Conservation, Water, Education/Curriculum and Recycling. There were about 5 of each topic and people just rotated through them and just shared their ideas on what we could do to in schools to make it sustainable. It was really interesting to listen to what the people had to say, especially the staff who had really strong opinions on some stuff.
Many of the staff members stayed positive and said that we could potentially do this, or start doing that, and stuff like that. Others, however, were more about reality check and how we would need a budget for each school and how we don't have any money. Those ideas were all very true and while I disagreed on some, overall, it was good. It was about people's opinions so I just let people talk about anything that, of course, related to the topic.
I met many interesting people there at the summit, including the staff members. There were staff who were really smart and talked about biodiesel and how it should be banned due to the amount being used. He said that there are 1,000,000,000 less people this year who can eat because of the food used in biodiesel.
After the World Cafe, we got to eat. The food was catered by the students and chef of Windermere Secondary. The chef came to talk to us for a little bit about the food. It was a sustainability summit, so the food was also as sustainable as it could be.
There, we used reusable cups, plates and cutlery. They had even brought reusable napkins for us to use, instead of paper. Also, the chef told us that most of the food had been bought locally and that some things he had to order outside. The food was really good and I didn't want to stop eating it.
Afterwards, we still had some stuff to listen to and we had an activity to do. We were asked to go into the group where we were most interesting in, and the Education topic had the most people. I went into the Food & Composting group because that was the group I was in earlier and I thought that it would be easier than moving to a different topic. I also liked the topic and thought it was interesting so I just went with it. It was a rather small group with only about 8 people but that made it easier to remember names and just really get into the conversation and input ideas. The 'Dotmocracy' was pretty fun too because we all got to see which topics and ideas were the most important. This showed how many people were all really keen on and interesting in the same things or different things.
Overall, the whole day was really long but it was fun and was worth missing school for. I was extremely happy I got to get some ideas out there and hopefully we can all start making a difference at school, work or at home.

Summit Meetings
We had many summit meetings over the past few months. There were some that I couldn't make due to other personal commitments, but overall I had an understand of what was going to happen at the summit.
We planned many things to who was going to be there, how many people were going, who was going to be catering for the day to how we could make the whole meeting environmentally sustainable.
Leanne was a really big help. Her and Lynn had good ideas and what was really good was that they really took the students ideas to heart and actually listened to us. I know that sometimes our voice gets lost with all the other people who are more important or older or have better ranking or whatnot.
The meetings overall went really well. We met at the VSB a few times and discussed what was going to happen and what was going on right now. I think that they really took the whole idea of students leading the summit and making it come true.
Throughout the meetings, we met many people from the school board and the different teachers/principals/vice principals who were all going to be apart of the summit.
In the beginning the group was a fairly big, but towards the end, there were few board staff and more students showing up to the meetings. It was really interesting and everyone equally had shown interest and really took it seriously.
It was really fun to go to the meetings, especially at Byng or the School Board because we all piled into Mr. Howe's car and sometimes Jess' car to go to meetings. I also had a sense of accomplishment because I, along with the other students, was carrying on something that needed to be done and that was really important. Environmental sustainability is something that is now talked about a lot more. I actually notice the commercials on TV about sustainability and after taking part in this whole thing, I'm shocked how I haven't really payed attention about it.
Now I'm really keen about getitng teachers to turn off lights or open their blinds/windows to save energy. Also, I recycle a lot of things that people will easily throw in the garbage. During the sustainability meetings, I learned that reducing and reusing was a lot more important as well as recycling. I was aware of the three R's but it just came to me that I wasn't reducing or reusing as much as I was recycling. I thought that recycling was the most important out of the three but I realized that they were all equally important. I think that other people are like me as well and think that if you recycle, it's really helping the environment. It's wrong, because well recycling does help, but you need to concentrate on the other things as well.
The topic kind of got swept away, but after the meetings, we had a final meeting with all the facilitators. I was shocked to see about 20 student facilitators at the meeting. I wasn't even aware of how many students were involved in the summit because not all of them came to the meetings. There were a couple of people who came once or twice, and then there were the regular members who included the students from King George and the girls from Byng.
I thought that the meeting had a really good turn out and it was pretty fun when Leanne picked names out to see which topic we would be facilitating. It was funny to see some people who were fighting over topics they wanted to do. Luckily, I got my first choice which was Food & Composting. I thought this was the topic I wanted to do because I already work in the kitchen with Chef and it was something that appealed to me.
The meetings were really good and after the last meeting, the facilitators meeting, it was hard to believe that after the weekend it was finally the summit!
I felt really good about finally getting able to tell my ideas to other students and staff members, as well as because we've been working on it for so long, it was like a huge weight was going to be lifted off my shoulders. I was also pretty nervous because many of us thought that we would be put in partners and facilitate, but we ended up doing it by ourselves.
I was nervous because I didn't want to have those awkward silences and not know what to say. Also, I was hoping that people in the groups would be a lot more talkative than me, so I could just say some stuff here and there, but not really take over.

Al Gore Presentation
Andrea Reimer came to our school to give us a presentation on Global Warming.
It was pretty long (it took up a full period and half of lunch) but it had a lot of information that was really interesting. It was a presentation that I couldn't look away from because it was so interesting. Each slide had information and pictures that was very easy to understand.
After I saw the presentation, I was really scared for the earth. There are droughts in places, and then there are floods in others parts of the world. It's very scary how life works out.
The presentation talked about the causes of Global Warming - Greenhouse gases and how the earth is warming up. There were before and after pictures over a number of years, where the mountain was covered in ice in the 1900's and now there was no snow and it was a small stream running down. It was scary how the earth was really warming up.
The statistics that she showed us was very interesting and also scary at the same time. The amount of gases produced including greenhouse gases and methane was unbelievable. It showed that people of the new generation has to step up and take the lead.
After the presentation, a couple of us in the Tech program decided to stay to ask questions and talk to Andrea Reimer. She had given us pamphlets that provided us with resources.
It was really cool to actually talk to her about the presentation. It was really good to see the presentation. I wish the other students had paid attention a lot more because it's not just my future, it's our future. And we're the ones going to be in charge of the new generation. If people don't start paying attention to what's going on around them, then we won't be able to get far in trying to change the world.

Trip to Byng
About a month ago, Minna, Alex, Mel and I went to Byng for a tour of the school. Of course, we didn't go around the whole school, since it was so big but we were able to see the Cafeteria.
We were apart of the Sustainability meeting so we got to hear from the engineers, and the staff from VSB.
It was really interesting to see the school since it was really different from our school.
It was clear that Byng wasn't as sustainable as King George in terms of not having a recycling box beside each garbage can. It was weird to see that because I was so used to seeing a bright blue box beside all the garbage cans.
When we went to the Cafeteria, we were so surprised to see individual packaging for lunch and breakfast.
The burgers and burritos were individually wrapped, and the fries were in small box containers.
There were also plastic containers for salad and there was even a deep fryer in the kitchen!
I thought that was really unhealthy and also many students came in during the span of 5 minutes, where all the wrappers were thrown away in the garbage.
It was really surprising because in our school we never use containers for lunch. We have reusable cutlery and plates.
The big schools usually do this because there would be a large amount of cutlery and plates they would need to wash.
In our school there are only about 50~70 students in the lunch program, depending on the month. At their school they have 100+ students in the lunch program. Since I take classes in the kitchen, I know how we have to have the dishwasher constantly running to wash everything the students use and what the Chef uses after cooking.
It was very interesting to see the school and it showed that the other big schools would have the same problem too.

Change of Plans
We have changed our goal in our group.
We were supposed to get information on Sheraton Wall Center on how much energy they use, what type of energy they use, if they use any energy efficient items, etc., but it was harder than we thought.
We were going to have to do a lot of research and we were going to have to write up a proposal for them, so the people there knew what we were doing.
Instead, we have now decided to still have the same outline, but we changed it from the Center to comparing our school to a more energy efficient school like Byng.
By doing this, we will be able to compare the differences between the two schools and consider what we can do to both that will change the footprint we are leaving to a less visible one.
This way, the research may be a lot more easier, and with some information from the person who looks after these types of statistics, we may even get a lot more done.
I think this is very good because we've tried something out that didn't work, and instead of trying to get info on the Sheraton Wall Center, we've chose a different way.
I really like the idea of this one because we are comparing two schools that are very close to us (distance wise) and something that we have more resources on.
If we were to still be on the topic of the Center, I don't think it would have worked out very well.
Though we may be a tad behind on the researching process, at least we have worked out a topic that is easier to face and easier to get resources.
We are still sticking to what our group had agreed to in the first place. We just added a few ideas; comparing the schools, and giving and taking ideas, so both schools can be energy efficient.
Our group is doing well, probably because we all feel the same way and have the same ideas about the project.
It may also be the fact that the group is just one gender, and there are less conflicts than groups that have mixed genders.
We all just tend to agree on whatever ideas any of us gives, and we all just listen to what we have to say.
I really like it because it's easier to get together and get into our groups outside of school.
We will catch up to our schedule in no time!

Group Blog; Due Jan. 7
[A] Our goal is to work on getting information about the two schools we are comparing.
- Information regarding what types of energy efficient products each schools use, what each school is doing to save energy, if the schools are trying to conserve energy at all, etc.
[B] We actually haven't done much because we changed our plan at the last minute.
All of our research and progress we had done to for the Sheraton Wall Center has gone down the drain.
We know we have to do a lot of work in the next week or so to get back up to the progress level we were at before Winter Break started.
[C] A lot of things need to be done.
- We still need to gather a lot of information about our school and Byng.
- When we do get the information, we have to compare them and jot down what can be changed.
Our school can take ideas from Byngto conserve energy, and vice versa.
- We also have to put everything together into a slide show- though we won't worry about that yet.
We don't want to get in above our heads.
We are hoping we will be doing these things over the next couple of days ~ week or so, gradually gathering information and getting everything put together.
[D] I think in the beginning, everyone is working on gathering the needed information and putting it all together.
After that, we will be able to decide who is doing which job, based on what everyone learned.
For example, if someone found a lot of the information on Byng then they can be responsible for the compared material of Byng.
Right now, everyone just needs to focus on getting the information.

All of our research and progress we had done to for the Sheraton Wall Center has gone down the drain.
We know we have to do a lot of work in the next week or so to get back up to the progress level we were at before Winter Break started.
[C] A lot of things need to be done.
- We still need to gather a lot of information about our school and Byng.
- When we do get the information, we have to compare them and jot down what can be changed.
Our school can take ideas from Byngto conserve energy, and vice versa.
- We also have to put everything together into a slide show- though we won't worry about that yet.
We don't want to get in above our heads.
We are hoping we will be doing these things over the next couple of days ~ week or so, gradually gathering information and getting everything put together.
[D] I think in the beginning, everyone is working on gathering the needed information and putting it all together.
After that, we will be able to decide who is doing which job, based on what everyone learned.
For example, if someone found a lot of the information on Byng then they can be responsible for the compared material of Byng.
Right now, everyone just needs to focus on getting the information.
